SBP in on the Ground

SBP is OPEN!!!

The Clarks, Chris Evans, Joycalyn, Les and Liz and I are all back in SBP and working. We have cleaned the office and are starting to unpack tools from the 30+ houses that we were working on. Les is calling SBP clients and Joycalyn and the Muellers are preparing a community meal for residents who return tonight.

Dear Zach,

It was a delight to meet you at the DC Fundraiser back in Sept. I was so happy to see you and Liz and her Mom and Dad again and the wonderful gang of folks all devoted to this project.

I was very moved by your original posts that started this blog (when you were evacuating ahead of Gustav and watching the news on the Industrial Canal) - especially after having been down there last fall to help rebuild a house in Violet with my other friends from DC. I hope to come help again in the spring or sooner.

Whew! So it seems another hurricane season has been survived. The pressure is off for another year and folks are getting back to, as you say, "Surviving Katrina".

But what about next year? You mention the levees need to be higher. Would that help? Or is it just a matter of time before it is completely destroyed again. I am getting this question from folks I encourage to come down and help rebuild. Is it ethical to put peoples' homes in harms way? They don't know about the communities that are trying to come back together. Communities that are built of relationships that depend on their proximity to each other. A way of life that will be lost if the area is not rebuilt. But . . , I think they will ask the same question, how can you put these communities in harms way?
How can we convince folks to put effort and money into stopping the erosion of the wetlands and reversing sea level rises or taking action to survive this? What can be done further to protect this way of life there?
Thanks,
Nancy from DC

Please post a phone number where I can reach someone at SBP. I am in the process of pledging a donation through my company. Thanks!
